Other than Ray being a farmer, I do not know much about Ray.  I had heard that he had heart problems, but that was not the cause of his death.

This is something that is not for certin as to how much impact this had on the  Hollands' but they were in the right area and proven that unless they moved two years after the 1930's census, Would have been smack dab into the biggest man made natural disaster in the History of the US.

I am speaking of the dust bowl.  Here are some major facts that would have affected this family:
  • In 1931 drought started kicking into the the area with a decrease in rainfall. With the plowing of the natural grass lands and the start of decrease of water the natural grass lands dried up.  The first start of dust storms kicked in this year.
  • Due to the storms, rain fall dropped from average 20" a year to 9".
  • Dust storms known as Black Blizzards would last from hours to days. Comming on from time of visual from an hour to even minutes.
  • Dust would be so bad that there was no place including inside to escape from the dust.. Winds would be as high as 80 miles per hour.
  • 189 Black Blizzards were recorded from 1931 to 1935.
  • By 1935 The biggest Black Blizzard hit known as "Black Sunday" which streached 200' high and 1000 miles wide.
  • With the prolonged dust exposure in two years time, people were dying due to dust nemonia.

Theory is that both Charles and Ray were caught into this.  Ray died of a presumed heart attack, I believe that if he was caught in the dust bowl that according to medical researchers it left you suseptable to a weakend immune system....so when Ray died in 1941 and followed by Charles in 1945.  it seems that this may be something to try to track down.
